Starting an online school: the operations you need on day one
The video call is the easy part of an online school. What makes it work is scheduling, follow-up and payments, and these are much harder to fix later.
Scheduling across time zones
Online schools often have students and teachers in different countries. Store every session in one time zone and show it to each person in their own. Mistakes here cause missed classes in the first week, especially around daylight saving changes.
Attendance that records itself
Teachers should not have to fill an attendance sheet after every session. Record attendance when students join the session from their link, and let the teacher correct it if needed.
A short report after every session
Parents of online students cannot see the classroom. A short report after each session, covering what was studied, how the student did and the homework, builds trust faster than anything else.
Packages, renewals and teacher hours
- Sell clear packages, for example a number of sessions per month
- Track how many sessions each student has left and when the package renews
- Record hours taught per teacher every month for payment
Monthly reports for families
Send a monthly summary of attendance and progress. It reduces cancellations, because families can see the value of what they pay for.
