International schools: running one school in several languages

An international school is several schools in one: different languages, different curricula and families from many countries. The system you use should make that easier, not add another layer of translation.

Languages of instruction

Many international schools teach some classes in English and others in a second language, or run a bilingual track. Model this directly: set a medium of instruction for each class, so lists, timetables and report cards show the right structure without workarounds.

Let each person choose their language

Staff and parents should be able to use the system in the language they read best. Check that the interface works properly in each language you need, including right-to-left languages such as Arabic, and that each user can switch language on their own account.

  • Write important announcements in two languages, in the same message.
  • Keep student names in the form used on official documents, and add a second form if needed.
  • Test the parent portal in each language before you launch it.

Mixed curricula and assessment

Students in one building may follow different programmes. Use streams for separate tracks, elective groups for subject choices, and separate grading scales where a programme needs them. Make sure report cards show the grades the way each programme expects.

Families across countries and time zones

Some parents work abroad or follow online classes from another country. Set the school time zone correctly, so dates and times of exams, classes and deadlines are clear. For online lessons, a recorded attendance when the student joins helps you follow students who are not on campus.

Records that move with the student

International families move often. Keep complete records: previous schools, documents, health notes and results. When a student leaves, you should be able to export their record and issue a certificate quickly.
